In Lu You’s Poems
Abstract: “Unconstrained ness” is one of spiritual traditions of great importance in Chinese literary history. There are many poets of this style throughout the ages of Chinese history, who have made themselves known to all with their unique characteristics. Lu You, though among those poets writing in “unconstrained ness” style, is different from others in his combination of progressive “unconstrained ness” in Confucianism as the core and sparse “unconstrained ness” in Taoism as the external structure. The forming of his unique “unconstrained ness” is based on abundant cultural implications: “Unconstrained ness” has been greatly developed by the poets living in the Chinese historical periods that arrange from Spring and Autumn Age to South Song Dynasty since it was been raised up to a spiritual humanity layer. And it was under the influence of the previous poets that Lu You developed “unconstrained ness” of his own style, which, in return, brought about his unique poet style: With progressive “unconstrained ness” in Confucianism, his poets convey passion besides anxiousness and indignation; with seemingly sparse “unconstrained ness” in Taoism, his poets are in lacking of lightness, quickness and elegance though while full of romance and exaggeration.
